Basic Cleaning Steps For All Food and Beverage Spills

  1. Scoop up as much of the spill as possible, with a towel or a spoon.
  2. Blot the spot, don’t rub or scrub. Gently press clean cloths into the stained area to remove moisture. Scrubbing can damage the fiber and set the stain into the carpet.
  3. Apply warm, not hot, water to the stained area and blot until the stain stops transferring to the cloth.
  4. If you can still see the stain, make a Detergent Solution by adding 1/4 teaspoon dishwashing liquid to one cup warm water. Don’t use too much soap, because it’s difficult to rinse out of the carpet.
  5. Apply the detergent solution, let sit five minutes, then rinse with clear warm water. Repeat until all the detergent is removed.
  6. Place layers of white paper towels on the spill to absorb the liquid. Weight down the towels with a non-staining glass or ceramic object. You can let them sit overnight.
  7. When the carpet is dry, vacuum to restore the texture.
  8. If you can see the stain after all this, repeat steps 3 through 7. It means the stain penetrated deep into the pile and has wicked up to the surface

Professional Spotting Techniques

No carpet cleaner can guarantee total removal of every stain found on carpet. Fresh, relatively new stains, are easier to remove than old, set ones. Old stains like urine, cordials, and deep coloured juices actually dye the carpet and are impossible to remove. You can only expect to lighten the intensity of the colour.

Improper treatment of stains by the home owner usually makes stains more difficult to remove. For this reason, be honest with the customer, let them know that even professionals cannot perform “miracles”. Such honesty will help eliminate misunderstandings regarding ability and liability.

Spots and spills happen to nearly every carpet and can be tough to remove.

Regular carpet cleaning helps in getting the stains, soiling and stench out of your carpets.

However, the basic rule to get out carpet stains successfully is to act fast.

Most carpets today come with stain-resistant treatments, so spills can be removed if you get them immediately. The more you delay, the tougher removing carpet stains becomes.

Dependent on what category your stains fall into, you may need to use different water temperatures, stain removers, and removal strategies to make sure that each trace of the stain is removed.

Stains are largely of 2 types :

  • Water Based Stains: – These include alcohol, blood, fruit juices, wine, milk, soft drinks and water based furniture polish stains.
  • Oil Based Stains: – These include butter, cooking oil, chocolate, crayons, mayo, candle wax, and black grease stains. These are comparatively hard to dispose of, than water based stains.

Whatever could be the type of stain, always remember to blot and nor rub stains away.

Some basic carpet stain removal tips are given below.

  • Scrape out the semi – solid or solid stains, employing a plastic spatula and vacuum out the stain as much as possible. Don’t employ a knife or other sharp – rimmed tools.
  • The liquid stain should be blotted up straight before it can seep into the carpet fibres. Use paper towels or tissues for this reason.
  • Always test the cleaning solution on a little out of sight patch to determine if it is causing any damage to the carpet.
  • When using a solution for stain removal, apply it to a cloth, do not pour it directly onto the stain.
  • When removing huge stains, start working from the outside edge, towards the centre, so the stain doesn’t spread further.
  • Never use a brush or rub harshly to remove the stain. It will only cause more damage to the carpet.
  • Be sure not to over wet the carpet while rinsing and cleaning.
  • For removal of ink stains, clean with some lemon juice.
  • Coffee stains can be removed by cleaning right away with a mix of 1 large spoon water with 1 table spoon of glycerine.
  • To get rid of special water based stains like urine, coffee and tea stains, employ a mild water based stain removal cleaning solution, like a mix of vinegar with luke warm water or hydrogen peroxide with lukewarm water.

If you’re unable to get rid of the stain using the tips above, it is a good idea to call for assistance from a carpet cleaning professionals.

Here's Rule No. 1 regarding spots and spills on your carpeting:

Clean them immediately. If you catch the spill when it's fresh, you've got a good chance of removing it totally. Consider these tips, too:

  • Carefully blot or scrape the entire area before applying any cleaning solution. Remove as much of the spill as possible.
  • Before using any cleaning solution, test your carpet in an inconspicuous area to make sure the cleaner won't damage or discolor it. Test the cleaning agents that you keep on hand before you have to use them to make sure they will not harm your carpet.
  • Do not rub the spill -- that might spread the problem to a larger area.
  • When you apply spot cleaner, work from the outside of the stain toward the inside to avoid spreading the stain. After applying a cleaning solution, blot up all the moisture.
  • A clean white bath towel is unsurpassed for drying carpet and brushing the nap back up to a standing position.
  • If you feel that there is still too much moisture after blotting the carpet, place a 20-mm-thick stack of white towels over the spot and weigh them down with a heavy object.

Keeping up with housework when you have kids can be a big challenge as any homemaker knows.

You start in one room on Monday and by the time you get the the last room to clean, it is time to start all over again. Housework requires the skills you learn along the way and a little organization to keep any home running smoothly. Some days go smoother than others, but when you are cleaning up after children, there are always little surprises.

Some parents will allow their children to eat and drink anywhere they like in the home, but this can be a very bad habit to ever get started.

Once they are given free reign to carry their snacks and juice boxes anywhere they want to as a toddler, you will likely be picking up after them until they leave home. Have one or two designated areas to eat and drink, not just for the toddlers, but for everyone. At least then you will know where the food and drink spills will be. Teach your kids at an early age to throw away their own trash and put away their own things. If you do not do it now you will regret it severely later.

Even when you do your best to keep food and drinks confined to specific areas of the home, there are going to be times when rules are broken and accidents happen. It might not even be the kids that cause them always.

You can have dinner guests that spill red wine all over your new carpet or upholstered furniture. You can walk through the house with your coffee and trip over the dog and make your own mess. Pets can make their fair share of messes to be cleaned up too. It happens.

Often times you might be tempted to leave it until later because you will have to break out the scrub brush, cleaner, and a towel to get it up. If you are smart you might invest in one of the new spot cleaning machines. They are great especially when you have pets and kids.

If you take just a couple of minutes to clean up spills and stains that are made on the floor, carpet, rugs, or furniture, your home will keep a cleaner look and you will run less risk of the stain setting in and becoming permanent. Always use a cleaner that is appropriate for the material you need to clean.

Bleach is great for some things, but not for carpets and upholstery.

Keep a good multi purpose cleaner that works well on several surfaces, but for carpets always use a specific spot cleaner that is recommended for it and furniture upholstery.

You will feel a lot better if you clean up spots and spills now rather than having them come back to haunt you later.
